ASTHMA SOCIETY OF IRELAND LAUNCHES #ASTHMAEDUCATION AND #OWNOURAIR COMPETITIONS AND RESOURCES FOR KIDS AS PART OF ASTHMA AWARENESS WEEK 2020

1 in 5 children will experience asthma at some stage in their life and over 380,000 people in Ireland currently have asthma. The current Covid-19 pandemic is a time of particular worry for people with asthma and their families. While people with asthma are not more likely to contract coronavirus, they may experience more severe symptoms if they do so. Children learning to manage their asthma well has never been more important.

As well as a booklet of engaging educational resources (colouring, quizzes, etc.) for younger children, parents currently home-schooling can also download a Clean Air Lesson Plan and Project fromwww.asthma.ie, whereby children can learn more about asthma and the importance of clean air through a fun and interactive project.

The Asthma Society of Ireland is encouraging children of all ages to become involved with their asthma, which is why they have developed these educational tools and competitions to help the children of Ireland get creative, spread awareness, learn about the science behind air quality and asthma – and, ultimately, to win some great prizes!

Speaking about the launch of the #AsthmaEducation and #OwnOurAir resources, Asthma Society of Ireland CEO, Sarah O’Connor, said: “All of us are staying at home to stop the coronavirus spread. This can be a difficult time for some children and families. The Asthma Society’s #OwnOurAir and #AsthmaEducation competitions are suitable for children of all ages. From toddlers to secondary school students, this is the perfect time to learn something new, get involved with Asthma Awareness Week 2020 and get better asthma management in place!”

Pat Naughton, Executive Director, People & Organisation Development at ESB, said: “ESB wishes to empower young people to reach their full potential through programmes that engage their scientific literacy and critical thinking skills. So we are proud to partner with the Asthma Society of Ireland in developing this initiative. The #OwnOurAir campaign is a fantastic way of engaging our younger generation in tackling today’s problems through creative and innovative thinking. It is based on engaging skills in Science Technology Engineering Arts and Maths (STEAM) and using their learnings to help their fellow pupils and citizens who have asthma in a very practical way.”
