The Sanctuary is set in the beautiful rolling countryside of County Cork just outside the village of Liscarroll in Ireland.
We have taken in over 2,850 donkeys rescued from all parts of the country. Many donkeys have been abandoned or put in a field and given little or no attention after having worked for their owners for years, hauling peat or pulling a cart. We strongly believe that their suffering should cease.
Every donkey taken into the Sanctuary is guaranteed a life of loving care. For many it is the first time in their lives that they have felt loving hands and heard quiet voices. Great care is given to ensuring that each donkey has individual attention. We are well aware of the strong bonds formed by a group of donkeys. In cases where more than one donkey arrives from a home we ensure that they remain together but, in time, some donkeys form new friendships with animals, often those nearer their own age.
Great efforts are taken in pairing up single donkeys, as they are sociable creatures and the majority need the close companionship of their own kind.
The Sanctuary is open at the following times with free admission and parking:
Monday-Friday, 9.00 am to 4.30 pm
Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays, 10.00 am to 5.00 pm
Please note that the gates close promptly, but you are welcome to to walk around the Sanctuary if your car is outside the gates after the closing times.
Dogs are very welcome to join you on your visit, although please ensure they are kept on a lead at all times.
We welcome group visits as the donkeys love the added fuss and attention they receive. However, advance notice of larger parties would help us enormously.
We totally rely on the generosity of the public and contributions in one of our collecting boxes will be most gratefully received.
