Perched high on a cliff above the River Blackwater, Lismore Castle dates back to 1185.
Today the 8000 acre estate of gardens, forests, and farmland is the Irish seat of the Duke of Devonshire.
The castle is not open to the public, but access to splendid walled and woodland gardens are available April to October.
There is also a fine selection of magnolias, camellias, rhododendrons and a remarkable yew walk where Edmund Spenser is said to have written the "Faerie Queen".
The West Wing of Lismore Castle has been converted into a contemporary art space and included in the admission charge, with at least one art exhibition per year.
Entrance to the castle is in the town of Lismore, beside the children's playground at the side of Millenium Park.
The Upper and Lower gardens are connected by a staircase in the Riding House. Public disabled lavatories are nearby but not on the premises. The new entrance will give wheelchair access to points of the Upper Garden and to the Gallery only. The gallery has toilet facilities for the disabled.
Currently only the lower garden is accessible to wheelchair users unless by prior appointment - contact 058 54424.

The garden is open 1.45pm to 4.45pm daily from 10th April until 3rd October, with 11am opening during June, July and August.
